Ron Paul's misguided media anger
Submitted by TJ Walker on Thu, 12/22/2011 - 2:45pmRon Paul is doing a lousy job of handling the spotlight into the racist writings of his old newsletters. By walking off the set of CNN he made a molehill into a mountain. Paul needs to understand that you can’t run for President and then try to control the media by telling them what they can and can’t ask questions about.
The more Paul looks angry at the media for asking questions about the racist rantings in his old newsletters, the more it looks like he has something to hide regarding the sorts of racists he appeals to.

GP Rep Claims First Lady has a “Large Posterior”
Submitted by TJ Walker on Thu, 12/22/2011 - 1:16pmRep. Jim Sensenbrenner R Wisconsin is getting the biggest press coverage of his life. He’s on the front page of the Drudge Report, Huffington Post and, basically, everywhere else. Did he finally author earth-shattering legislation after 33 years in Congress? Nope. He said the First Lady has a “Large Posterior.”
A Democratic operative recently overheard Sensenbrenner on the telephone in an airport lounge saying the following:
“She (the First Lady) lectures us on eating right while she has a large posterior herself.”
That quickly made its way into the press and it is dominating news coverage as I write this. The Congressman’s office did not deny the statement and said he would be sending an apology to the First Lady.

How Conservatives Really Control the Media
Submitted by TJ Walker on Tue, 12/20/2011 - 12:28pmHow Conservatives Really Control the Media
Sean Hannity calling President Obama on Fox News Channel a “socialist” every night in prime time on the Fox News Chanel is only the visible tip of the conservative propaganda iceberg. The Right’s real power lies in its ability to shape the narrative and define what is fair and out of bounds for the rest of the media.
Last week MSNBC reported the following:
“So you may not hear Mitt Romney say ‘Keep America American’ anymore, because it was a rallying cry for the KKK group, intimidation against blacks, gays and Jews, and the progressive AMERICAblog was the first to catch on to that.”
Within hours, so-called liberals at MSNBC like Chris Matthews and Al Sharpton were falling over themselves to see who could offer the most debasing, abject apology to Mitt Romney.

On fixing the world, or, help George Carlin stick it to god
Submitted by fake consultant on Thu, 09/15/2011 - 7:05amOnce again The Fates have come our way to provide a story, and once again, we have a contender for the “Ironic Story Of The Year”. It’s got everything you need for serious irony: an irascible comedian who mocked religion at every opportunity, a city that loved him, and the rich coincidence of his having been born at the crossroads of New York City’s communities of religious education. And that’s why, today, we’ll be talking about the effort to name the street right next to Manhattan’s Seminary Row … Carlin Street.
(And before we go further, a language warning: we’ll be quoting George Carlin liberally, and that means there may be present today certain of the seven words with which he created one of his best known routines. You are now officially warned.)

On Being Bumped, Or, Let’s Have Another Roundup
Submitted by fake consultant on Mon, 07/04/2011 - 9:43amSo I thought I was going to have another Jay Inslee story for y’all today, but it turns out that I’m going to have to do more research before we can “come to press” with that one.
But that’s OK, because the world’s been busy doing a lot of other things – and while many of them get media coverage, some don’t get a lot of notice at all.
And of course, there are also those stories that look one way at first glance…but look a lot different when you dig a bit deeper.
We’ll hit a few of those today, have a bit of fun doing it, and get ready for what promises to be another busy week of strategically not doing things in Washington.
To make things even better, some of the stories will be real, and some won’t.
We’ll see if you can tell the difference.

Is a journalism degree worth the parchment paper?
Submitted by mbrock49 on Fri, 04/29/2011 - 5:58pm"For a while now, experts have classified the journalism major as the one of the more useless college majors in the nation. Last year, online slide shows from national publications ranked journalism high among the worst majors for graduating college seniors.
Is journalism a worthless major in Arkansas?
Indeed, better college writers in Arkansas universities go on and find writing careers in the newspaper industry after graduation. There are more than sixty newspapers in the state which leaves plenty of options for writers seeking real world journalism writing experience. But do college reared writers have an edge over experienced writers and reporters?

On Fighting To Win, Or, A Tale Of Two Kinds Of Democrats
Submitted by fake consultant on Sun, 04/17/2011 - 5:52pmIf your view of politics is filtered by a lens marked “Progressive” or “Liberal”, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ve been gnashing your teeth and pulling your hair in frustration over the “give away the store, then negotiate” approach professional Democrats have used when facing the challenges from the Tea Party last year, and all that’s come after.
Over and over and over people like me have written stories wondering why Democrats, starting with this President, don’t get out in a very public way and slam Republican policies, over and over and over—especially when most Americans hate the things Republicans seem to love to support.
Turning over Government to the highest bidder?
Not so popular.
Going back to a heathcare system run by, for, and of the insurance industry?
Again, not so much.
Jacking up taxes and healthcare costs for you and me in order to provide another trillion in tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires?
So unpopular pollsters hardly believe it.
But there is another way, and today’s story is in two parts: we’re going to talk about how hard it is to get Democrats, as a group, to get loud and get aggressive—and then we’re going to talk about Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, who is out there showing any reluctant Democrat just exactly how you can “grow the brand”.

On Reincarnation, Or, Was Glenn Beck Just Promoted?
Submitted by fake consultant on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 6:52amSo, the thing is, I’m not the one who tends to follow the herd.
If everyone’s backed up on the freeway, I’m the one who will look for the longer but less crowded country road. When everyone’s talking about whoever out-sang or out-danced or out-cake-bossed someone else, I’m the one with the blank face—and if there’s a room full of people line dancing, I’ll be the one over in the corner having a smoke and wondering what went wrong with y’all.
And that’s why, while everyone else is all excited about Glenn Beck’s imminent “disappearance” from the television firmament…I’m not so sure.
In fact, I can easily see a scenario that leads to a lot more Beck, and that’s what we’ll be talking about today.

Real journalism debunks Charlotte media's gay public park sex myth
Submitted by matthillnc on Mon, 04/04/2011 - 8:39amIn late February, Charlotte news station WBTV aired a report on supposed and "alleged" sex acts occurring between men in one of southeast Charlotte's public parks.
The story was prejudiced and biased and furthered stereotypes of gay men as sexual predators. What's worse, the story contained no fact and was based on nothing more than anonymous online postings to a hook-up website.
In my role as editor at QNotes, the LGBT newspaper based in Charlotte, I reached out to WBTV reporter Steve Crump and their news director, Dennis Milligan. Neither were ever willing to acknowledge the problems with their report.
This weekend, QNotes published an investigative commentary that tracked down police records on charges and arrests for soliciting crimes against nature. What did we find? See the infographic at right (click to enlarge) and read the excerpt after the jump...
