Some good news from NC-11

Shuler opposes Bush plan to sell forest land

Amen.

As the Citizen-Times reports...

"(Congressman Shuler) is absolutely opposed to the sale of national forest lands in the 11th District and across North Carolina,” Shuler spokesman Andrew Whalen said. ...when things get tight around the house, you don’t sell off the front yard."

2006 midterm results indicate success for Dean's Fifty State Strategy

Thursday Chris Bowers at MyDD posted on a study by Harvard University's Elaine Kamarck indicating early success for Howard Dean's Fifty State Strategy. The study focused on "39 congressional districts where Dean had made an investment in organizing" (as opposed to states where the organizers worked at the state party headquarters for all U.S. House candidates). The North Carolina Democratic Party now has three organizers.

...those congressional districts where the DNC had paid organizers on the ground for over a year more than doubled the Democratic vote over what would have happened due to forces outside the control of the Party, such as the war in Iraq and the unpopularity of a Republican President.

Shuler staff says Taylor left no files

Heath Shuler's being sworn in today, and it looks like he's already got his hands full. Taylor's folks wiped out the information on the office's computers.

"They've been just as difficult as they can be," Shuler's chief of staff, Hayden Rogers, told the Citizen-Times.

Rogers said it's not just a question of his Democratic boss being inconvenienced by the outgoing eight-term Republican's staff. He said constituents who had asked their congressman for help will now have to start all over.

"We have no case files. We don't even have knowledge that casework was being done for individuals," he said. "To clean off the operating systems,

I thought I was finished writing about Charles Taylor, but the man's misdeeds just won't stop hitting the news. Taylor smashed the conventional election wisdom by getting shellacked despite outspending Heath Shuler by over 2 million dollars. From the N&O: "In the 11th District in Western North Carolina, Democrat Heath Shuler spent $1.7 million in upsetting Republican Rep. Charles Taylor, who spent $3.8 million. That includes $2.7 million that Taylor loaned his own campaign."

Back in 2004, Taylor broke the law by refusing to file campaign expenditures to the Federal Elections Commission, and now they're whacking the lumpy former Congressman with a big fine -

He's Not Even a Congressman Yet and the Scandal Rumors Have Already Started!!!

A local WNC blog called West and Center posted this earlier this morning:

Here's a rumor I heard yesterday that got my interest going: An acquaintance who is plugged into the local media told me of chatter from the Asheville Citizen-Times editorial staff about a "big story" in the works about our new Congressman, Heath Shuler. According to this acquaintance, the AC-T is currently mulling over the possibility of going public with a story that would potentially be damaging to Shuler. This acquaintance did not press for more information, so it is anyone's guess what this is, how scandalous or damaging it might be or what its future implications are. Or even if it will ever be public.

Great Jumpin' Jeebus on a Pogo Stick! The man's not even due to be sworn in as our new Congressman for another week and there are already rumors of "potentially damaging information" swirling around!

From TPM Muckraker: Taylor linked to tricksy robocalls

Misleading automated calls designed to turn North Carolina voters against Democrat Heath Shuler may have come from a GOP campaign firm controlled by the D.C. lobbying giant, Dutko Worldwide.

The calls, whose impact favored the (doomed) re-election campaign of Rep. Charles Taylor (R-NC), pretended to come from the Shuler camp, and came as late as 2:30 a.m., according to one report.

Taylor's campaign paid Direct Strategies over $113,000 for "phone calls" and "calling" services, according to filings at FECInfo.com.

Chasein Chickins and other Things!

Good Afternoon Everyone! I hope everyone is fixing to have a Great Holiday! I got the best Christmas present ever yesterday! The Docs have isolated what was affecting my wife and I am happy to report she is now on Meds to correct it! YEA!

I was seriously thinking of giving Robert a call and having him bring a team in from Chapel Hill. You all are the first to know I do not mix Religion & Politics but prayer did work. Now, to matters at hand. Yes, as the title says, I will shortly be running around the property like a half-crazed lunatic (Please stay calm and don’t call the VA or Broughton to bring Butterfly nets) trying to capture our Chickens and make POWs out of them. They have found a hole in the wire.

I do have several mean roosters named, George Bush, Mr. Cheney, Rummy field, and chucky.

Goodbye Charles Taylor, former Congressman

Western North Carolina celebrates today. The 109th "do-nothing" Congress is over and with it the Congressional career of Charles H. Taylor. Our 16-year nightmare of Taylor's scandals and failures has come to a close. We won't have Charles Taylor to kick around anymore, and it's only just and fitting that Scrutiny Hooligans pay our last respects to the man who inspired more political action than we'd ever undertaken before.

Goodbye Charles Taylor, and in the words of the immortal Lyle C. Rashorta, "without you none of this would have been possible... or necessary."

For the Early Crowd

The Lump's Last Supper

Looks like it's gonna be Peanut Butter Charlie time at the Grove Park this weekend!! Via AC-T:

U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor, R-Brevard, will host his annual Christmas dinner at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. The dinner is billed as the largest sit-down, political dinner in North Carolina, and this year’s event is expected to draw an even larger crowd than in previous years, according to a Taylor press release.

More than a thousand people typically attend the event, which Taylor, who lost his seat to Democratic challenger Heath Shuler, has hosted since 1992.

The keynote speaker will be Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter, chairman of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee. Hunter will speak about the U.S. military in Iraq, as well as his recommendations for the future of U.S. troops in the Middle East and around the world.
