Now that they hold the purse strings, it's all of a sudden a good idea:
"The vernacular being used is to call it a conveyance fee," Andrea Bushnell, NCAR executive vice president, wrote in a recent note to members. "Don't be fooled -- it is still a transfer tax on the sale of real property! This is the same tax that we fought hard in 2007 and was defeated 24 times on 24 local ballots."
That's what you get for helping to elect a political party that needs to be bottle-fed its legislation by ALEC and Art Pope's stable of confused faux-Libertarians. Methinks those $4,000 campaign contributions are about to dry up...
House Bill 485 would allow North Carolinians to take a tax credit of up to $2,000 a year for five years if they buy a brand new house in the coming fiscal year. Republican sponsors of the bill and members of the home building industry said it would create thousands of jobs and stimulate a sluggish market.
It might stimulate new home sales, but that's only part of the market. There are tens of thousands of empty foreclosed properties on the market, dragging down the values of other homes in nearly every neighborhood in this state. This bill would make that much worse.

Small governments crippled by proponents of small government:
The measure to eliminate the land transfer tax option headed to Gov. Beverly Perdue's desk after the Senate approved it 40-8. The House approved it earlier this month.
"What we're trying to do is to eliminate a bill that's a potential (obstacle) to affordable housing," Sen. Bob Rucho, R-Mecklenburg, said during the brief debate.
Which overlooks the glaringly obvious: If the Hometicks can afford to contribute hundreds of thousands to candidates and spend millions here and there on ballot battles, I'd say the "affordable housing" mystery has been solved.
