Amendment: One. Human Rights: Zero.

Last month, I discussed the utter pointlessness of late-in-the-game Presidential Primaries, namely North Carolina’s primary on Tuesday, May 8th. But the big story on May 8th isn’t who political-minded North Carolinians are voting for. It’s what we are (or are not) voting for that has the lame-stream all a-buzz.

There has been a great deal of talk all across the USA regarding North Carolina’s Amendment One – aka “The Marriage Amendment” – vote. Amendment One is only a single sentence long, but it’s one of the most controversial sentences in recent memory (right up there with “I can’t believe it’s not butter!” and “Casey Anthony is innocent!”).

12 year old students tackle amendment one (video)

Just to share this 4 1/2 minute video following middle schoolers from Carolina Friends School sharing their views about amendment one.

From the intro of the video:

In a small school a little north and a little west of downtown Durham, N.C., a group of eleven-, twelve- and thirteen-year-olds has been busy organizing a field-trip.

Watch as a middle school's gay-straight alliance, GLOW, for Gay Lesbian or Whatever, embarks on an adventure in civic engagement with real consequences for many of the club's members.

"They don’t really see kids as having an idea of how they want their future to be like," said Sarah, a GLOW member, "but when we actually voice our opinion it really does make a difference."

More racial violence in our "post-racial" times

I'm wondering why it took almost two weeks for this story to surface:

Brothers Christopher Lee Latta, 29, of Allensville Road, Roxboro, and Brandon Latta, 22, of Peed Road, Roxboro, were arrested Tuesday morning on one count each of felonious assault and ethnic intimidation in the March 31 attack on John Lumpkin...He suffered a swollen eye and injuries to his face. Most of the bones in his face were broken, as well as his nose, and he also suffered major damage to his sinus cavity.

What's (almost) more unsettling is the reaction by some of the commenters on the story:

Feds rethink stance on Kinston voting?

The fight against Non Partisan elections just heated up a little bit. As reported by the Kinston Free Press and others (http://www.kinston.com/news/federal-79724-kinston-voting.html) The Justice Department has softened its stance on the Non Partisan referendum.

RACING against five simple words

With five simple words, Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James revealed the true purpose for a constitutional amendment filed in North Carolina’s legislature in 2011 that would ban all relationship recognitions for same-gender couples.

“We don’t want them here.”

The “them” the amendment proponent referred to with the Raleigh News & Observer was easy to identify.

The “them” was me.

Too heavy a toll for Ocracoke
