Better late than never
Submitted by James on Mon, 06/01/2009 - 6:32pmState Senate leader Marc Basnight, D-Dare County, and state Rep. Bill Owens, D-Pasquotank County, have asked North Carolina’s congressional delegation to urge Navy officials to move some of the fighter squadrons based at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia to Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point.
Knowledgeable people, including many here at BlueNC, have argued for this exact same course of action for nearly two years now. It's nice to see elected officials finally getting their acts together.

About that OLF
Submitted by James on Fri, 04/24/2009 - 2:09pmThe US Navy's plans to dump never-ending noise in the northeast part of our state hit a speed bump last week when the General Assembly wisely passed legislation severely limiting the Navy's ability to commandeer North Carolina land for an outlying landing field. The best coverage of this issue is always out of Virginia.
Asserting its rights under the U.S. Constitution, the North Carolina General Assembly has passed legislation that could complicate any effort by the Navy to build a practice airfield in Camden or Gates counties.Read more
Is your community next?
Submitted by Kiera on Tue, 03/24/2009 - 9:46amVirginia plans to build an Outlying Landing Field (OLF) in NC without the consent of the people. The OLF is to mitigate the noise pollution in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, VA.

We need your help this has been going on for almost 10 years with over 22 communities on or off the list at any given point. This is dangerous to the environment, the wildlife and the people.
Over 30,000 acres are ruthlessly going to be impacted, that is 46 square miles.
This needs to be stopped and we need your help. Support House Bill 613.

It's funny what running scared will do
Submitted by James on Thu, 02/19/2009 - 1:39pmYou have to hand it to Richard Burr. After a week of positioning himself as Art Pope's go-to guy for fighting working class people, he's all of a sudden interested in gaining some populist cred. His issue of choice is the Outlying Landing Field.Read more
2009: The final nail in the OLF coffin?
Submitted by James on Wed, 01/14/2009 - 10:18amThe US Navy's "divide and conquer" strategy has tried to pit down east North Carolina communities against one another, but judging from the strength of local opposition across the board, it seems unlikely to work. Ham-handed from the get-go, the Navy still has not made a case (convincing or otherwise) that a North Carolina based Outlying Landing Field is important to its strategic readiness. That said, do there appear to be some cracks in the opposition?Read more
