I couldn't figure out how to add all this in a comment, so I apologize for having to make this another post. This is in response to Screwy's question about Chuck Taylor's effectiveness in earmarking House appropriations funds.

If you start diving into the House appropriations committee earmark miasma, it's going to make you sick and disgusted. Truly. And you're also going to find that the @$$holes cover their tracks prettty darn well. Though I haven't found a good central database of all earmarks by Congressman, I did find one site that looks promising. It shows that in 2004, North Carolina ranked DEAD LAST among all states in earmarked appropriations. In 2005, NC had moved up to 47th.

I personally think the whole earmark business sucks and that our so-called conservative House members are hypocrites of the highest order for slopping at the public trough and then trying to brag about it. That said, for anyone to claim Chuckie Taylor is especially effective at anything besides embarrassing North Carolina seems to be little more than wishful thinking. It looks like our entire Congressional delegation pretty much sucks at bringing home the bacon.

According to the News and Observer evil twin of the Charlotte Observer, it looks like Sue's been reading the paper lately to get the facts she need to put on the illusion of being a responsible representative. After the Charlotte Observer's good coverage of the ins-and-outs of immigrants in the workforce, Sue Myrick is introducing bills this week to prevent illegal use of Social Security numbers and crack down on North Carolina road builders who hire illegal immigrants.

Just when you thought Chuck and Virginia had done just about all the damage they could, the N&O reports this dirty deed:

WINSTON-SALEM - Four North Carolina members of Congress are co-sponsoring legislation to allow natural gas exploration off the state's coast. Reps. Virginia Foxx, Patrick McHenry, Sue Myrick and Charles Taylor, all Republicans, signed onto the bill seeking to lift the federal ban on offshore drilling.

The Charlotte Observer yesterday wrote a story that raised my estimation of Mike Easley a few notches. He's taking on the Feds to preserve public land for the common good. It's a smart, competent move that we should support all the way.

Easley seeks shield for roadless areas

Gov. Mike Easley petitioned federal officials Thursday to protect nearly 174,000 acres of roadless areas in the state's national forests.

It's pretty bad when a sitting president can't even get his party loyalists to back him. However, when he's attempting to sell the country down the hole, we won't call them names or belittle them for finally doing something that might just be in the country's best interest.

An article in The Washington Post has this to say:

The bipartisan uprising in Congress in the face of a veto threat represented a singular defeat for Bush, who when it came to national security grew accustomed during his first five years in office to leading as he chose and having loyallawmakers fall in line. Now, with his poll numbers in a political ditch, the port debacle has contributed to a perception of weakness that has liberated Republicans who once would never have dared cross Bush.

I think maybe Sue Myrick has been reading BlueNC, where we've criticized her for being so far up a certain President's fundament that he needs a special chair cushion. Today the North Carolina Conservative publishes what purports to be a letter from Sue to the President. The entire body of the letter is:

In regards to selling American ports to the United Arab Emirates, not just NO-but HELL NO!

If this is for real, it's just plain silly. There's no analysis here, and there's no reason for her position. I don't quibble with her bottom line, but it's hard for me to see it as more than a campaign tool. Saying that you have a backbone is not the same as having one.

Either Sue Myrick's doctor told her she'd better release some of that hot air, or she has zero understanding of her role in government. (I'm open to persuasion either way.) Myrick is calling for the federalization of some Charlotte police to do federal immigration duties.

The problem for Myrick is that in 1997, the Supreme Court, in an opinion by Justice Scalia, declared that a federal power can not accomplish a federal mandate by commandeering state police officers. (521 U.S. 898) I'd love to hear why Sue believes this to be Constitutional.

I haven't paid much attention to the shenanigans of Ms. Myrick and her allegiance to Dear Leader, but a number of pundits have put her gubernatorial ambitions on the table, so she is now squarely in my sights. And after a brief stroll through her creepy website all I can say is what the f*ck is going on in Charlotte? Is this really the best you can do?

So far, Sue Myrick is the only member of NC's Republican House contingent to publicly declare allegiance with one of the candidates for Tom DeLay's old job. Her pick: Roy Blunt. (Follow that last link to Blunt's bio at BeyondDeLay.org; you'll find a nice Charles Taylor bio as well.) That's the Roy Blunt who is now the House Majority Whip, who is acting as the interim Majority Leader during DeLay's troubles. This guy was elevated to power by Tom DeLay and has been his right hand for years. Blunt is as business-as-usual as business-as-usual can be.
