Veto the anti-abortion bill, Bev

And any other piece of legislation that has idiotic language like this:

The physician or qualified professional has informed the woman, either by telephone or in person, of each of the following at least 24 hours before the abortion:

c. That the father is liable to assist in the support of the child, even if the father has offered to pay for the abortion.

Seriously? You want a doctor to give his patient legal advice that should be coming from an attorney? Who the hell is writing this crap?

Republicans abandon teen mothers

Victims of the NC Taliban:

The 18-year-old mother of 3-year-old Destiny is one of several local teens who wrote to state lawmakers about proposed budget cuts that would eliminate Planned Parenthood's Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention program in Wilmington. Established in 1994, it provides services to pregnant or parenting teens 19 and younger aimed at keeping them in school and avoiding or delaying another pregnancy.

Jasmine Malloy started her handwritten letter, "Dear To whom (it) may concern."

That was your first mistake, sweetie. The ones who are in charge are not concerned about you.

After dark: Message for Taliban Stam

I have a feeling there's gonna be a lot of this sort of thing coming in the months ahead.

Asshat of the week

The coming assault on women

Hot off their latest "prayer breakfast," North Carolina's Grand Old Patriarchy is gearing up for what promises to be a long and relentless assault on the rights of women. And why not? Everyone knows that women can't think for themselves. The weaker sex needs the government to ensure they are informed about their own bodies before they decide to terminate a pregnancy.

You see, women are especially stupid and ignorant when it comes to pregnancy. Just ask Taliban Stam. He has it all figured out. The government shouldn't be telling women about the importance of safe sex. That would be an insult to god. Nor should the government inform women about the risks of, say, brain surgery. Who cares about that? No, the only thing that really matters to Taliban Stam is passing a new law requiring women to understand that god wants them stay pregnant and have those blessed children no matter what. Plus, of course, he also wants to strip abortion coverage from insurance policies covering state employees and college students in the UNC system.

Drop the delusions

The title of this post came from a comment I made to our dear friend Jake about Taliban Stam on another thread. I resurrect it here in response a column written this morning at The Watch, by Edwin McLenaghan. It contained this passage:

In the wake of the worst economic devastation since the Great Depression, North Carolina is at a crossroads. Does the state follow the cost-cutting path of states like Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi, racing to the bottom for low-skill, low-wage jobs in competition with places like China, India, and Vietnam?

Fine sentiments for sure, but seriously delusional. Or if I may be more direct, What part of "fuck poor people" don't you understand? Sorry, Edwin, but yours isn't even a question worth asking. North Carolina passed the crossroads you're writing about, and the path we're taking is as clear as all the broken glass ahead.

Progressives came to World War III with an army of kindergartners and pea-shooters "led" by business-as-usual insiders. We got our asses handed to us, We're up against "lie and buy" ... and unless we want to cede the next generation to the plague of free-market extremism, we'd better stop asking stupid questions.

This is war. Get used to it.

Do you really want this guy running the show in Raleigh?

When I replied to a spam political email (sent to all attorneys in Wake County who had their addresses in an attorney database) and said I didn't appreciate being spammed by political operatives of any party, and that the email lists were not designed for that purposes, Stam emailed back:
