Investment adviser pleads guilty to stealing $1M from clients

Posted: Sep. 9, 2009

Raleigh, N.C. — A Raleigh man who once ran for state treasurer and a seat in General Assembly pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing more than $1 million from his investor clients.

Christopher Brooks Mintz, 34, pleaded guilty to fraud by an investment adviser. He will be sentenced on Dec. 7.

Mintz worked as a financial adviser in Cary and was a representative of a Boston-based brokerage, where he maintained accounts for his clients and himself, authorities said. Between December 2005 and last October, he embezzled more than $1 million from the brokerage accounts of with two elderly clients, authorities said.

"Financial advisers trusted with control over their clients’s property owe those clients great duties of care," U.S. Attorney George Holding said in a statement.

Ty Harrell and Americans for Prosperity: BFFs?

Rut-roh. Rep. Ty Harrell (D-Wake) and his Time Warner Cable protection bill get an assist from the tea-partying, right-wing group Americans for Prosperity. When you call yourself a progressive Democrat and wind up on the same side as Americans For Prosperity, you're doing something wrong.

Please ask your state representatives not to sell you out to Time Warner Cable.

NC Democrats Push Anti-Municipal Broadband Legislation, Threatening to Derail Federal Stimulus Money

As reported by the Independent Weekly, Representative Ty Harrell (D-Wake) and State Senator David W. Hoyle (D-Gaston) have penned SB1004 (and it's House counterpart, HB1252), known as the "Level Playing Field/Cities/Service Providers" bill. Contrary to its name, the bill seeks to prevent municipal governments from installing high-speed broadband or wireless internet service and acting as an ISP, even if commercial ISPs have no plans to offer service to their communities.

Close on the heels of Time Warner Cable's announcement that it would begin testing "tiered bandwith" caps in Greensboro, and the annoucement of Salisbury's plan to follow in Wilson's footsteps and provide fiber to the home for its residents (promising symmetrical speeds of up to 100Mbps), these bills not only threaten the possibility that North Carolina will finally claw its way above the national average in residential broadband access, and do so in an affordable manner, it also threatens North Carolina's access to the $4.7 billion the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has set aside from the $787 billion stimulus package to bring broadband to underserved and un-served communities.

Read on for legislative contact information and learn why North Carolina isn't likely to receive fiber internet any time soon...

Memo To Bryan Gossage: Get Your Facts Straight, THEN Attack.

Apex Town Councilman Bryan Gossage sent his first shot across NC Representative Ty Harrell's bow last week in their race for the NC 41 seat. It's too bad he didn't do a better job of fact checking.

"If turnout is low, we win," Capps (R) said.

There are countless reasons for thoughtful people to reject the philosophies of the Party of Greed, but Mr. Russell Capps today nails the heart of the matter: Republicans hate democracy. Why else in an interview with the News and Observer would the bizarre representative from Wake County say such a perverse thing as:

If turnout is low, we (Republicans) win.

Republicans do not represent the interests of people, they represent the interests of the monied and power elite. They have no stake in more participation in democracy, they win only when their extremist minority gets engaged. Republicans don't care about voters, they care about profits for corporations. Which accounts for their methodical suppression of voters all across America.

A Tale of Two Candidates

http://andrewjacksondem.com

In the campaign for North Carolina's 41st State House District, the choice could not be more clear. The voters of the 41st District have before them two candidates whom represent the future and the past. The sharp contrasts reflect the transformation happening in the Tar Heel state as North Carolina transitions from a ruarl-agrarian economy to one of a high-tech information based.

Democrat Ty Harrell, the "can-do" candidate, demonstrates a vast knowledge of the issues that face his constituents and the state of North Carolina. He is passionate about making a difference in the lives of people and there is no doubt he will be an effective leader for the folks living in NC House District 41.

Republican Russell Capps, the reactionary Representative "NO", has proven himself to be too extreme and out of touch with the needs of a district growing in population and diversity. His brand of politics is a link to the Old South past, where government protected the interests of the landed gentry while ignoring the plight of the masses. Capps is ineffective as a legislator and his district suffers by his ineptness to understand the issues shaping the future of North Carolina (his only legisltiave accomplishment was HB829, 2005 Displaying Government Flags).
