Bringing back our economy
Submitted by Foxtrot on Tue, 02/09/2010 - 7:27pmOkay, here is something I saw on an email. With the majority of the lawyers in either house of congress being democrats and the majority of the businesspeople in either house of congress being republicans, why should we not get the two together.
SAW IT ON EMAIL so take it for what it is worth. PLEASE do not go berserk trashing me for it.
Worth thinking about. I am sure there will be adequate disagreement about it.
Thanks, guys :)

Help Needed Defeating Wal-Mart on Battlefield
Submitted by wuwm on Mon, 08/31/2009 - 6:25pmLast week Virginia's Orange County Board of Supervisors vote to approve the building of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter within the historic boundaries of the
Wilderness Battlefield - and one of the most significant battlefields of the Civil War. The Civil War Preservation Trust has been fighting Wal-Mart on this location for over a year - seeking an alternative location and compromoise - and after last week they desperately need everyones help to stop Wal-Mart from moving forward and opening the door to further destructive development.
Even State Senator Creigh Deeds, the Democratic candidate for Virginia Governor, has written a letter to the president and CEO of Wal-Mart pleading with him to move the location off the historic battlefield. Wake-Up Wal-Mart is helping in this fight and you can too by also writing a letter on the Civil War Preservation Trust's website and also help spread the word yourself.

Walmart's $4 Drugs Coming From Indian Company Whose Products Have Been Banned In US and Canada
Submitted by wuwm on Wed, 06/24/2009 - 9:52am
Walmart, in one of their worst ways of prioritizing prices above qualities to date, turns to a foreign drug supplier, Ranbaxy Laboratories, LTD, who has repeatedly been investigated by the FDA and the DoJ for "inadequate" safeguards against contamination, falsification of records and submitting false information to the FDA.
On top of that, just eight months before the FDA inspected Ranbaxy's Paonta Sahib plant and found significant violations, Walmart awarded the company a "Supplier Award" for improving shipping times and performance.
In a new report on our website, we detail their multi-year spanning violations, DoJ investigation, Congressional Investigation, and list out all of the drugs made at the facility in questions. Additionally, we detail their recent violations below.

Walmart Pays $400K in Black Friday Case
Submitted by PiercesBBQ on Tue, 05/12/2009 - 1:55pmI've blogged before about how Wal-Mart was responsible for the trampling of a worker on Black Friday last year. They didn't provide ample security and they stoked a frenzy with their "doorbuster deals." It was crass capitalism at its worst, something that has become Wal-Mart's M.O.
Well, now we hear news that Wal-Mart has trying to make the story go away by paying $400K to a victim's fund. Perhaps they saw the writing on the wall. But what's troubling about this case is that they refused to apologize. It's a classic case of throw money on the problem and hope it goes away. It's a rich guy dropping a "Benjamin" on the bloodied body he just pummeled with his Rolls.

The Wal-Mart Discrimination Debate Plays to a Full House
Submitted by wuwm on Thu, 03/26/2009 - 3:13pmThe WSJ's law blog has an update on the discrimination suit in which a 54-year-old Wal-Mart employee from California named Betty Dukes alleged in a discrimination claim that she was denied the training needed to obtain a higher-paying job because of her sex.
The bad news, from where we sit: Neither side emerged as the clear winner during Tuesday’s oral arguments out in San Francisco over class-certification in the proposed Wal-Mart sex-discrimination class-action. (We like finality.) The silver lining: the suspense in the case will continue to build (We like suspense.)

Citi Downgrades Stock Rating on Wal-Mart, Panics Market Over Employee Free Choice
Submitted by wuwm on Thu, 03/12/2009 - 2:20pmAre analysts utilizing fearmongering to demonize a Walmart unionization?
On Tuesday, Citigroup analyst Deborah Weinswig downgraded Walmart stock from a buy to a hold, reportedly because of fears that the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) would "make it easier for employees to unionize [and] would raise the retail giant's labor costs and hurt its competitiveness."
It was hard to view this as anything but an overt political act intended to set off panic in a fragile economic climate (and an an attempt to bulldoze Blanche Lincoln), since the bill hadn't even been introduced yet and its passage is far from assured. In fact, not much has changed since February 19th when Weinswig gave Walmart a "9.5 out of 10" rating.

Wall-E vs. Wal-Mart
Submitted by PiercesBBQ on Tue, 02/10/2009 - 4:04pmI watched the great movie Wall-E last night. If you haven't seen it yet, fire up your Netflix or jot down a note to hit Blockbuster after work.
If you have seen it, you probably recognized the corporate behemoth of Buy-N-Large. We have a similar, sinister company down here on Earth called Wal-Mart.
In the movie, Buy-N-Large has gotten so gargantuan and out-of-control that it has taken on every aspect of society: It peddles every possible product at its Supercenters, it sells gas, it controls the banks -- and it has even taken on the role of a quasi-government.
