TAXES

I recently made a comment on this, but thought I would put it out there for others to discuss. There is, now, an underlying feeling that taxes are a negative. This is perhaps the greatest threat to American society today, not al Qaeda, not Osama bin Laden, but the right-wing philosophy that taxes are a burden on the American people.

Taxes are a membership fee, and in this case you get what you pay for.

Your membership includes good roads, because business wants good roads.

It includes good ports, because business wants good ports.

It includes lots of corporate farming, because business loves those farm subsidies that pay them NOT to grow food.

Your membership also includes Social Security, because once upon a time Progressives stood up and fought for our Seniors.

Your membership also includes Medicare, because once upon a time Progressives stood up and fought for our Seniors.

Your membership also includes Medicaid, because once upon a time Progressives stood up and fought for those who have fallen behind.

Here is what your membership does not include:

1. Healthcare. Because the wealthy don't need it, and Progressives won't fight for it.

2. A Strong Military. Because the aristocrats realized somewhere along the way that mercenary forces and corporate support forces make them lots of money.

3. Living Wages. Because living wages would cut into the profit margin, and the aristocracy would rather turn this map red as well.

4. Equality. Because Leviticus says that gays are going to burn in hell. And, those who eat shrimp...and, pork, clams, oysters, lobster, rabbit, and deer.

5. Safe Ports. Because, unlike good ports, a safe port costs money and slows down business. And, Progressives won't fight for it.

6. Your turn.

We need to stop playing by their rules and believing their lies. How many Democrats have come out saying how taxes are bad, but blah blah blah. Taxes are not bad, paying taxes makes you a patriotic American. Not paying taxes, not WANTING to pay taxes makes you an Aristocrat.

Great entry, Robert.

Except for one thing.

You say again and again that progressives won't fight for it. I don't think that's right. I think progressives WILL fight for it. The problem is, there aren't enough progressives YET to turn the tide.

But every time you write an entry like this, you're furthering the cause. You're fighting for what is right and good ... and that's what it's going to take to cause the sea-change necessary. "Liberals" have sat back for too long and been sucker punched by reactionaries. "Progressives" are fighting back.

It won't be pretty and it won't be a cakewalk. But we will win. Because we are on the side of progress toward the common good.

It's a strange world

that the Imperial Neocons have constructed. It is MORE conservative than the 1950s, when people believed in Social Security, Medicare, and the like. Now, we seem to be fighting back all the time, defending our votes "for" taxes. It is going to take a major struggle to realign our values, but like you, I think we are on our way.

Taxes are the price we pay

for a civilized society. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes.
George Lakoff suggests we talk about taxes as investment -- we need to invest in infrastructure, education, etc. If we talk about "tax relief" we are giving them the point that taxes are a burden that needs to be relieved. There was a time when the top tax rate in this country was over 90%, and they are acting as if that is still the case. I'm convinced that there is no level of taxation that would be satisfactory to some of the wingnuts -- they always want more tax breaks for the wealthy. And they are still making the argument that reducing the tax rates will increase revenues, even though that has proven false throughout the current administration.

Tax Avoidance

I've been saying since the Reagan Administration that the right doesn't want anyone making over $300,000 a year to have to pay any taxes whatsoever.

Taxes - You mean services?

I encourage people, in any discussion of taxes, to substitute the word 'services' for the word 'taxes'. Republicans want to cut services for Americans, while Democrats want to restore services taken away by Bush's irresponsible cuts for the rich.

I LOVE this framing, Screwy

because it is the god's truth.

Great way to frame the conversation!

What have YOU done today to make the world a better place?

Excellent Post

and let's not forget- what a better way to support the troops- pay their salary! Same with police officers and firefighters!

Plus, when these anti-tax politicians cash their paychecks, do they not realize those are tax dollars they are receiving? If they hate taxes so bad, they should stop taking the money!!
