The Republican Who Can Win in 2008

I'm pretty bullish about our chances for taking back the White House in 2008. I think our top tier is very strong, and any of our top three candidates would be a great nominee and President.

Likewise, I like our chances against the Republican top tier. None of the GOP's big three (Giuliani, Romney, and Thompson) puts much fear into me. At this point, I'd place my bet that Romney wins the nomination, and I think we'd trounce him.

There's one Republican candidate that scares me though. Well, they all scare me, but this guy scares me because he can win. Politico has a great article about him here. I think Huckabee has several things going for him:

1. He's a great communicator - clear, eloquent, and folksy. More human than RomneyBot, and warmer than Rudy, Huckabee connects with people.
2. He fits the "compassionate conservative" bill. Swing voters who lean to the right will dig his ministerial empathy.
3. He's smart. I've seen him at some off-the-record events, and watched him in action at NGA events, and he understands policy very well.

I think we still have an advantage against Huckabee, but he cuts down our advantage considerably. Thoughts?

Keep Mike on the Jenny Craig diet and he will fade away?

Of course you should be scare of this republican religious nutcase good ole boy. But his chances are slim and none within the present mind set of the Bush 28% republicans. If he had the amazing support and growth that the Ron Paul campaign has at the moment which is exposing the neo-con establishment in the Republican party [ In North Carolina, it's the Art Pope faction with his control] and it's failure at the polls in 06. You shouldn't be worry about slim Mike pulling it off.

haha

I'm not sure I would classify Paul's support as "amazing" - it's pretty thin in the places where it counts. He's probably a sincere guy, but I truly hope his uber-selfish platform doesn't really resonate with anyone.

Huckabee, on the other hand, is capable of building the same kind of coalition that Bush built in 2000 and 2004. He has the same ideology, minus the Bush baggage, plus eloquence.

Go Ron and give those neo-con Republicans hell!

Ron Paul is for real.....number 1 on the net and funding raising,,,,out passing McCain last month,,,,,yesterday he raise more money on the net in one day than Howard Dean did in his campaign.....his message is simple.....against the war and for individual civil liberty and against the Republican neo-con Globalism treaties........Watch and he is not selfish.....He is the only congressman that gives back massive congressional expenses for his congressional office every year....A man of real principal who votes with the democrats about 70% of the time....

Give me a break

I almost feel bad knocking on L. Ron Paul. Almost.

1. Okay, "number 1 on the net" means nothing. Nothing. Gibberish.
2. Beating McCain in fundraising is like having better vision than Stevie Wonder. McCain's in debt. I beat him in fundraising.
3. I really don't think that Paul raised more money yesterday than Howard Dean raised in his campaign, cause Dean raised $53 million. And he ran actual ads and stuff, like a big boy.
4. Paul's message is simple: he's libertarian. That means, "I got mine - everyone else screw off." His idea of the Constitution means no choice for women, no federal government, everyone for themselves. That's selfish.
5. Ron Paul's "principles" are sticking it to anyone who's made the bad decision to be born poor.
6. He's against the war, but only because it's not conservative enough for him. Think Pat Buchanan.
6. He doesn't vote with the Democrats, okay? His Progressive Punch score, last time I checked, was in the 20s.

Ron Paul can kiss my flag-waving, government-loving, capital gains tax-raising, universal health care-pushing ass.

Per NPR, he's competing for the far right vote in the Iowa

straw poll this weekend. Candidates on the fringes usually don't pull in more than 30% of the vote as a max(ala Pat Buchanan). And Huckabee is nowhere near 30%.

Environmental Defense Fund

Cell phones will be to the 21st century what tobacco was to the 20th.

My prediction

If he gets Top Three in the straw poll, you'll see his numbers in Iowa go up. When Thompson, Brownback, and Hunter drop out, he'll pick up their support. I can honestly see him becoming the second-tier alternative to the Big Three.

As far as the "far-right" is concerned, they're all far-right - it's the Iowa Republican Party! Tancredo is the candidate of the Buchanan-type folks. Huckabee has a real chance to build a strong coalition. If he does well in the straw poll and some of the doofuses drop out, he can pick up some cash and gain some momentum.

Tommy got mirco-chip today by his own GPS!

Thompson drop out today......gone like his miro-chip lobbyist check...........

Second

Huckabee got second, and even though Romney spent more than some candidates have raised on the "straw poll" his support is less than Huckabee plus Brownback.

Huckabee had me worried in the beginning of the year, then not so much, now he is back. This puts him right back below Romney in the "most likely to win nomination" ranking in my book. I would put him above Rudy, given the nature of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina.

I also think that if he won the nomination he would be the "most electable" republican.

Has anyone considered

how 3rd party candidates may impact 2008? Nader? Bloomberg? I feel pretty good about the Dems chances in 2008, but throw in a couple 3rd party nutballs, and who knows what may happen...
