This just in

Just got this rather stunning email from Bob Hall and Democracy North Carolina.

MOST CITIZENS NOT VOTING IN NORTH CAROLINA
Young Adults More Likely to Be Binge Drinkers Than Voters

A new "Civic Participation Index for North Carolina" shows that only two out
of five adults [40.8 percent] bother to vote in the typical state election.

The Index says that young North Carolinians age 18 to 25 are half as likely
to vote as their grandparents -- and more likely to engage in binge drinking
than participate in elections.

And it says more men own guns than cast ballots.

I guess that explains our government then

Don't it?

That is pretty stunning

Glad to see you about. How's the newspaper bidness?

Newspaperin'

is fun. And it keeps me out of trouble. The first couple of issues were a little like inventing the wheel. Not a whole lot of open source newspaper designs out there--yet.

I've been enjoying it.

After initially preparing a vigorous "Damn You Editor!" letter because we in CH could not receive it, I was happy to find a Carrboro Citizen box at my bus stop.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.
-me

whew

Glad I got that box out there. It's on my route.

young women voters

I have read about programs to spread information on AIDS by putting it in hair salons and I have thought for awhile that there must be some kind of friendly way that this could be used to reach out to register and convince young women to vote. Something that isn't preachy - I have some memory of that age, and not wanting to be told what to do. Still, women do get their hair done in large numbers, and I think it would be worth a try. I think issues that are important to women in that age groups - college costs, job opportunities, health care, schools - put them on our side.

we have to make the case

#1 that voting matters
#2 that governments affect their lives
and the most difficult part thanks to Reagan et al
#3 that there are politicians who are good people

If we can make all three of those cases then the world will be a better place, no matter who people end up choosing in private.

And one of the people who could best make those cases?

Listed right at the bottom of your post, Blue South.

That's why NC needs Brad Miller.

I was going to say...

Obviously we need to put voting information on beer and liquor bottles or offer free shots after you vote, but I suppose chun yang has a better idea!

hmm ...

now that's an interesting idea ... Set up an open bar tent 50' from every polling place, ;) then get the nice poll workers to hand out one coupon to every voter. HA!!

but maybe not ...

I say we expand early voting (one stop) and allow same day registration AND charge every eligible voter who doesn't vote $20. It works in Australia.

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Um...they used to do that

No lie

What?

the free beer coupon? Ok, I say we stand-up for our heritage and demand an open bar at every poololling place. heh.

[leaving the misspelling in for effect ;)]

shot of liquor

had an older man ask me where his liquor was when he was leaving the poll in November. He was joking, of course.
