Thoughts on ABC's Healthcare Forum

So last night, I watched Charlie Gibson's talk with the President. I had hoped that it would be a perfect opportunity for him to finally shed some light on the situation, instead of having everyone else do it for him. Honestly, after watching it, I don't know what to think. I don't know how many people stayed up to watch it, but I hope it wasn't a lot. The president really didn't do that great of a job explaining his plan. Of course, I try to keep up with it on a day-to-day basis, and I still don't have a clue on the details. He kept reiterating the point that "If you like the coverage you have, you can keep it." He answered nearly all the questions with that one response. But for me, that's really not what is at issue. What happened to the Barack Obama from last year who deemed healthcare reform as a moral obligation. What about the 45 million people without any coverage that you promised to help. All this talk about cutting costs is starting to get irritating. It's a noble effort to try to get the best bang for the buck, but the President, as well as Congress, needs to rethink their priorities. This issue has, since Truman's Fair Deal, about making sure that all Americans have access to good quality healthcare.

My anger is not only directed at the President, but "our" senator. I did not vote for Senator Hagan to see her fold on one of the biggest challenges of our time. Why is it that so many in Washington are scared to call it like it is. I can almost understand why there isn't much support for single-payer. But we can't even get a bill with a public option. Something tells me that whatever comes out of this in October is going to be a disappointment to us all.

John Kerry is one of the most liberal senators we have and this is what he was settling for today:

My sentiments exactly

It's easy to understand why there's so much cynicism. Nice post. My bet is we're going to get a pile of dog poop wrapped in a bow with the words "American Public Health Care" written by some corporatist Senator, maybe even our own.

Dog Poop

Honestly, before we solve anything, the issue of lobbying and campaign finance reform should be taken care of. But, let's face it. That's never going to happen.
