UNC silent on Limbaugh connection

I'm sure the leaders of UNC are hoping that America's backlash against anti-women extremism will fade as time goes by. And they certainly don't want to upset the budget writers in the General Assembly by severing their relationship rightwing radio stations. And so we are left with a flagship university that has sold its soul to the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck.

Limbaugh advertiser update below the fold.

ProFlowers said Sunday on its Facebook page that it has suspended advertising on Limbaugh's program because his comments about Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke "went beyond political discourse to a personal attack and do not reflect our values as a company."

The six other advertisers that say they have pulled ads from his show are mortgage lender Quicken Loans, mattress retailers Sleep Train and Sleep Number, software maker Citrix Systems Inc., online data backup service provider Carbonite and online legal document services company LegalZoom.

I know what you're thinking. Nothing's going to change, so why bother trying? UNC isn't going to rock any boats by cutting ties with rightwing hate. Nothing to see here. Move on.

Except there is something to see here - and what there is to see is disgusting. The oldest public university in America is supporting a vast network of hate-profiteers by allowing Tarheel Sports to be broadcast by stations like WRDU 106.1

Rush Radio

Thank you for setting up this webpage. As an alumnus of UNC who still lives in the area, I am deeply concerned about what it says about UNC that our sports teams' coverage is carried on Rush Radio. As we all know, sports is an important component of the UNC Undergraduate experience.  UNC is also well-known for its high female to male student ratio. Mr. Limbaugh's attacks of the past week included attacks on all women. By choosing to have UNC sporting events broadcast on WRDU Radio, UNC is essentially promoting greater exposure of its students and alumni to Mr. Limbaugh's views.  I am ashamed of this tacit acceptance of Mr. Limbaugh's diatribes and strongly urge the University to change its venue for sports programs.

UNC Sports Rush Limbaugh

As long as UNC continues this arrangement with WRDU and we are associated with Rush Radio, I will not donate to the Unversity. I believe that the comments made by Mr. Limbaugh far exceeded 'opinion' and slandered Ms. Fluke and every other woman in the USA, single or married, who ever used birth control. If UNC is a forward looking university, then it cannot be associated with such antiquated and crude comments as those made by Mr. Limbaugh. The University should pull any and all association.
I commend your efforts.

I am a UNC grad as is my father and as is my sister. We ALL contribute to UNC Annual Giving and two of us are or were long time contributors to the Educational Foundation. We're done until this is resolved. I sent a very firm email to the Chancellor this afternoon and with my 83-year-old father's encouragement, warned the Chancellor that contributions are at risk. At least Bill Friday has stepped into the light.
