Vatican money

Rumor has it that the knight of the right, Art Pope, is gearing up his electioneering machine to target a small handful of NC House districts. Reliable sources say he intends to fund a big city consultant who would work on defeating three candidates for state House: Rep. Alice Bordsen, Rep. Graham Underhill, and Rep. Dickson.

We saw Pope crank his machine into action two years ago to unseat arch-rival Richard Morgan, so it's a safe bet that's what's happening again.

As you may recall, Pope has perfected the art of skirting the letter of electioneering law - using his 527 organization and corporate money to influence the outcomes of selected races. One of his new targets, Alice Bordsen, is from Alamance County. That's the county where a lunatic sheriff is making a name for himself harassing brown people.

Seems like fertile ground for Pope to stir up hate, no?

I don't know a lot about Borsden, Graham Underhill and Dickson, but I do know this. If Art Pope is against them, they're probably good people. If you can help them out, please do.

To my knowledge.

interesting ...

They are all Democratic women. Wonder what's got his shorts in a knot?

"It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit." - Harry Truman

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

He was born with his shorts in a knot

The John Locke Foundation is a quintessentially patriarchal fiefdom, with grown men still acting out their daddy problems. Sort of like George Bush, but without the so-called charm. There are a couple of token women, but for the most part, the Locker Room is a testosterone tank, pure and simple.

But it's not just that they're women, it's that they're uppity women.

Alice Graham Underhill

has held a Republican-leaning district in Craven and Pamlico counties during multiple tough elections. She's reliably green, pro-choice, and reasonable on all issues of concern (to the best of my knowledge). As such, of course, the right-wingers detest her. I sent her another contribution just last week. I recommend Alice for your consideration.

Dan Besse

PS--She does not hyphenate her last name.

Thanks Dan

I updated her name ... and will check out her website. Perhaps we can make Pope's interference an badge of honor.

September 1.

I say someone make a plan for a NC fundraising campaign for some of these folks. Email lists, blogs, the works. I wonder if we could even do something more?

I hope some of the people who hang here and have experience in this sort of thing will step forward. For once, I'm out, but would be willing to do a small part.

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

Given Pope's record choosing a replacement for Morgan

I wonder if it's too late to get these guys onto the ballot?

I know ... crude. But so is the wanton act of pouring hundreds of thousands of corporate dollars into local elections. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "buying" seats, but it's about as close as you can get without crossing that legal line.

To my knowledge.

Note the new signature.

Just a little tactical Google-bombing. Feel free to join the fun.

Mr. Art, Willie Ray, Stevie and the fake Van Braxton site.

It is always interesting to read of Mr. Art.

I remember the classic 10th District primary race between Willie Ray Starling and the two-term Republican incumbent, Stevie LaRoque. It was widely reported at the time that Mr. Starling was the darling of the Pope. Willie Ray, camo suit and all, defeated LaRoque in the primary and the subsequent runoff. And then LaRoque made some comments that Mr. Art did not receive all that well. It ended up with legal action being taken against Little Stevie. Then Little Stevie apologized and the case was settled ‘out-of-court.’ (Some of the local lawyers wanted the case to go to court in hopes that some of those big shot Raleigh lawyers would come to town dressed in those fancy Joseph A. Banks suits and driving those imported cars.)

This time around Willie Ray decided not to run. But LaRoque is in the race against the Democratic incumbent, Van Braxton. You may remember the famous “fake Van Braxton Site.” Well, it’s still up and running at: www.vanbraxton.com. Stevie is already accusing Rep. Braxton of “gutter politics.” Of course the “fake Van Braxton site” is not considered “gutter politics.” Go figure?

All kinds of facts are coming out. As a freshman rep, Stevie sat on the second row in seat #16. As a freshman rep, Braxton sat in the next to last row in seat #107. That's 91 seats behind were LaRoque sat. Some think the more senoir reps placed Stevie up front because they liked looking at the back of his head. Other question that as the reason. It is real confusing.

I do not know if Mr. Art is supporting Stevie or not. But the race is off and running and the “fake Van Braxton site“ remains an integral part of the campaign.

That was a big stinkin' mess of a campaign

But we learned a lot about Mr. Pope. He seems willing to push right up to the limits of the electioneering laws ... but appears to come up short in the "thick skin" department when he gets (rightly) criticized for using his family's corporate money to influence the outcome of elections. The SBOE said what he's doing is legal, but that doesn't mean it smells any better.
