Victory in Brunswick County!
Congratulations to Cape Fear Citizens for a Safe Environment on stopping one of the proposed mega-dumps in NC! (See Cape Fear's website, www.stopthedump.com , to see if you think importing "auto fluff" from all over the world is "environmentally friendly").
One mega-dump down, four to go: Camden, Hyde, Columbus and Scotland. Veronica Carter of NC Conservation Network reminds us that:
"It isn't over until we pass legislation to ensure this doesn't happen to anyone in North Carolina again".

Sims Hugo Neu opts against Navassa landfill, recycling center
Sims Hugo Neu will not build a landfill and recycling center in northern Brunswick County, the company’s president said in a statement released by the company this morning. Robert Kelman said that “after close consultation with Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis, Sims Hugo Neu has decided to leave Navassa to pursue other opportunities for the development of our state-of-the-art material recycling facility.”
The project has been a source of controversy in Southeastern North Carolina. The company and town had argued that the project would bring jobs and an economic boost to the struggling town. Opponents feared truck traffic, noise and pollution. Bills had been filed in the N.C. General Assembly to kill the project. Two of those bills, for the first time, began moving toward approval last week.

Recycling Is One Thing -
a landfill is quite another.
"Sims Hugo Neu has decided to leave Navassa to pursue other opportunities for the development of our state-of-the-art material recycling facility.”
PR ...
... from Sims Hugo Neu sounds quite familiar here in Scotland County. Perhaps they share the Waste Management playbook? :)

Great news, Zate!
Thanks for letting us know. Keep up the great work.
Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Hard to believe...
... that this Republican agrees with something on this board. :-) I grew up about 5 miles from the proposed Hugo Neu site, and I am more than happy that the landfill won't be built. It was a bad idea for a great many reasons.
Don't Feel Alone -
there are other (R) lurkers and we don't bite ... much. ;)
