Early voting
According to various news articles I have seen from across the state One-stop early voting, which ended Saturday, has increased voter turnout. In a few counties that turnout has been less than hoped but in most counties it has worked well.
Mecklenburg
Almost 23,000 people have voted already here. Unfortunatly, the areas where most have voted are generally not areas favorable to our side.

voter turnout a bad sign for counties?
First, let me say that I think voter turnout is critically important and that it is a shame that more Americans don't exercise their right to vote nearly as much as they complain about their elected officials.
It was interesting to read the newspaper articles about voter turnout. I was particularly struck by the Mecklenburg and Henderson county turnout cited. Mecklenburg, of course, has the repeal of hits hafl-cent transfer tax on the ballot, and Henderson has put the Land Transfer Tax on its ballot. I would bet that the high voter turnout is representative of a lot of people turning out to vote AGAINST the land transfer tax and to vote to repeal the transit sales tax. I think people are more motivasted to vote against something than they are to vote for it.
transit tax
I wouldn't count on the repeal of the transit tax. I think people are starting to realize that one third of the transit tax is paid for by out of county people and if it is repealed that one third will have to be picked up by Mecklenburg county residents.
The anti tax people are using our light rail as the lighting rod for the repeal effort but in truth the light rail is only getting 30% of the tax money. The rest of the tax is going to an expansion of the bus routes. Since the tax was passed in 1998, our bus ridership has more than doubled as many more routes have been added.
