Navy to NC: Screw you

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The United States Navy has an interesting strategy for spreading the word about its plans to decimate northeast North Carolina. A few local papers with next-to-no readership plus the Big Daddy newspaper in Virginia (the Pilot). Interesting that they're ignoring the one newspaper that every legislator in Raleigh reads.

Why am I not surprised?

Please go to the link and sign up to receive the SEIS by mail when it is published. The Navy already knows the opposition is rising, let's give them even more to worry about.

Most of those can't be found online too

Makes it harder for the average netizen to read. Heh heh...going to sign up right now for the mailed edition.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

I signed up to receive the Executive Summary AND

the Draft SEIS on CD Rom only. That alone will make them wish they'd printed it in both large papers in the state....or at least the N&O.

Sorry tax payers.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

Vote Democratic! The ass you save may be your own.

"Keep the Faith"

Me, too

"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

And also forwarded to friends around the country.

From that website

"The specific format of the public hearings will be posted to this site once it has been finalized, but those planning to attend can anticipate a short opening presentation on the background of the project and an overview of the field work, data collection, and key finding presented in the Draft SEIS. Following the opening presentation(s), in keeping with the primary purpose of these hearings, there will be the opportunity for the public to provide comments on the Draft SEIS."

This is stating that only the comments received that address issues found in the DSEIS will be commented on. We can say anything we wish, and we should and MUST do that, regardless of this statement above. The Navy did not respond to all concerns in the DEIS. I know of at least one question to the Navy about encroachment issues around Oceana/Fentress that the Navy did not address at all. And this very reason is what is causing the "fidelity" issues in Hampton Roads now.

Our elected officials really need to address this second OLF issue and let us know where they stand.

Mr. Easley, Mrs. Dole and Mr. Burr, you need to let us know where you stand. Rep Butterfield has made numerous comments against this OLF in NE North Carolina. He represents at least 3 of the proposed sites. He has stated NE North Carolina is not the best place for this thing. Please start supporting him.

Worth saying twice.

Good and clear.

It's my understanding that one of the key considerations the Navy MUST take into account is the collective input of North Carolina elected officials at all levels of government. If there is unanimous or near unanimous opposition to Site C by the House, Senate, Council of State, Governor, etc., that should weigh heavily on the eventual finding.

If the Navy pushes Site C again, it will end up in court again and the Navy will be found negligent in factoring in the desires of the State.

Only at the local level

is there anyone actually saying "NO". Rep. Butterfield is trying to say no, and for the most part is doing so. If a reporter asks this question to an elected official, "where do you stand on this OLF being built in North Carolina in your county or district?" only the local politicians will say, "not in my county" with conviction. The rest seem to be avoiding the question. I just dont understand this.

Elected officials throughout this state please read this link

All elected officials need to support the people of North Carolina and not VA. All elected officials need to beable to answer these vital questions. How will this OLF fix the encroachment issues found around Oceana/Fentress? How will this OLF fix the fidality issues Adm. Natham stated and still keep Fentress open performing its reported portion of the military mission? Why are you empowering the Navy to eminent domain 30,000 acres in North Carolina but will not require the Navy to eminent domain any property in VA?

When these questions are answered, it will show that the only way to fix these issues is to eminent domain the lands needed in Virginia just like the Navy is about to do in North Carolina. Without forcing the Navy to equally enforce decisions across the states, you are saying you are in favor of helping the people of Virginia over the people of North Carolina. What elected offical is willing to state that? When the decision to eminent domain is excercised equally it will be shown that this second OLF is not needed as the encroachment problem and every other problem created by the Navy and VA will be corrected without coming to North Carolina.

deleted due to duplicity

duplicated comment. I deleted it.

We were both in the Navy, man

We know they don't care what we think. They will just "National Security" it and do what they want.

That is what they have always done.

Our night of the long knives is coming. Again.

Should be taking the lead on this. Can’t you hear it? North Carolina Congressional delegation come on down! It is your turn to play the Price is Right! Navy said in governors study panel, “more squadrons at Cherry Point (MORE MONEY) if an OLF is built in Craven or Carteret Counties.”

Butterfield is a mystery Congressmen.

I know next to nothing about him, don't you think it is time to change that? What can we do to get the national spotlight on him and the OLF?

Talk about his new committees and responsibilities and his lack of fire on the OLF?

Where are the candidates?

Please do not lump Congressman Butterfield

in the same catagory as Mrs. Dole, Mr. Burr, or Mr. Easley. Nor with any of the state officials that are transparent with regard to this. Rep. Butterfield is doing stuff to help us and has stated he is opposed to this thing on numerouls occasions.

I do not know who my state senator or state representitive is and shame on me. But since I have not seen or heard anyone suppporting this NO OLF movement from an elected official it really doesnot matter in my opionion, those people dont care about me, or NE NC and when it comes time for voting, they dont have mine. Simple. I will figure out who the incumbant is and not vote for him.

What he could be doing is asking his fellow elected officials to be supporting the NO OLF movement at the state and federal levels.

However, Mr. Jones, 3rd district has part of Washington County site that will be in Beaufort County and I have not heard anything from him and he has the other two sites not in Rep. Butterfield district. Would be nice for both those gentlemen to stand up on a podium someplace at the same time and tell the world, NO OLF.

that comment started out more as a "Who is this guy anyhow?" type of thing, then degenerated from there.

From your last post

I feel that yes you have a valid point about not knowing him. Non of our elected officials have been that vocal about this, but they should have some opionion by now. Oct 2000 this thing started. Our folks should be more vocal about this by now.

Because Perquimans County will have their public hearing on 21 mar, the latest this DSEIS can be released is about 5 Mar. We dont yet know if anyother site has a date before 21 Mar.

If I was the Navy no way would I let this DSEIS be out longer then it has to be before I started collecting comments and shut people up. The way the Navy has lied and misinformed the puplic, this statement is true. The Navy will only give use the bare miniumum time required. This is just a check in the box punch list for the Navy. They dont care or want to receive inputs.

If our elected officials dont get vocal now, they are going to lose the operatunity to protect us. So from that point of view. yes, who are these guys. An extremely valid question.

Congressional Pressure

The point is Butterfield has not rallied his Congressionail allies. Where are the press conferences, letters, speeches? His face should be everywhere telling his consituents and North Carolinians that they are doing xyz to protect the state. It is his and all the NC delegations morale duty to right this wrong. Elizabeth Dole, Richard Burr?

Letters, don't do a thing. Everyone has written letters, it is the physical action that makes the statement.

Butterfield left his post on the Armed Service Committee where he would actually have some clout. Why would he do that? It was to escape the committee where he had accoutablilty for the decsions to screw his constituents.

We know the stench of this debacle has reached the White House and rather then halting this travesty with one phone call, they are willing to sit back and let the dictums of the military rule.
